small memorial
about the project:
Small Memorial is a community engaged art project which taps into the magnetic draw of homes that are waiting to be torn down.
I am interested in exploring the universal and topical experience of losing a sense of home, especially in circumstances of renoviction, development, rent increase, and gentrification. Throughout my own process of being uprooted I have longed for moments of memorial and celebration to examine and share my experience. This work investigates the role of the artist in the community in the context of a housing crisis, and offers support and creative outlet to fellow community members with lived experience of displacement. Small Memorial is a series of public activations and gatherings, which were intended to culminate in a celebration - for a specific East Vancouver home slated for demolition. Through this project, the home where the events occur will become symbolic for many other homes and personal histories, creating a sense of ritual, support, and acknowledgement of shared experience.

Due to Covid-19 physical distancing requirements the public gatherings planned for this project have been cancelled, but that doesn't mean that the energy and intention of the work is lost. You are are invited to "attend" a re-imagining of this event, as I wish it could have been. Click the image below to check it out!
