The Outlet Studio (Port Coquitlam)
While in residence at the Outlet Studio, I used community engagement and interdisciplinary art to recognize and record homes and places that are woven into family histories. I am particularly interested in themes of inter-generational memory and how our understanding of home evolves, in light of the ongoing housing crisis.
Through conversations with community members, I collected stories, descriptions and photos of ‘memory hot spots’—those seemingly everyday places that hold a magnetic pull on our minds and hearts. In response, I created portraits of these places as gifts for contributing community members, and facilitated workshops where participants crafted their own place portraits through drawing and monoprinting.
The drawings I made in response to community members' contributions have been turned into postcards, which were distributed at an open studio. The back of each postcard includes a prompt to be mailed to a meaningful place, with a written memory of something that happened there. In this way the postcards were sent to places rather than people as a small, thoughtful intervention rippling outwards into the world.
